The origins of home automation

Home automation, a contraction of the Latin word “domus,” meaning “house,” and the suffix “-tic,” representing technology.

It brings together technologies that enable the control and automation of lighting, blinds, heating, security, and much more. Its goal is to improve the comfort, safety, and energy efficiency of a home. From simple automatic controls, it has now become a pillar of smart living, offering comprehensive and personalized management via digital interfaces.

The beginnings of home automation

The history of home automation began in 1486 when Leonardo da Vinci designed a system of automated doors that operated using counterweights. Several centuries later, in 1850, Eugène Robert-Houdin, a famous inventor and illusionist, marked a new milestone by developing an electric gate that opened automatically when a bell was rung. These early inventions laid the foundations for home automation, but it was in 1955, with the first wireless remote control developed by Eugene Polley, which allowed users to control their televisions, that home automation took a decisive turn. This concept, which allowed devices to be controlled remotely, was a technological revolution at the time.

In 1979, the Xanadu house in Florida became a flagship project, illustrating what a fully automated home could be. This avant-garde residence showed how automation could simplify everyday life.

In 1984, the term “Smart Home” was introduced by the American Association of House Builders to describe a home where systems are centralized and interconnected, a key step in the evolution toward modern smart homes.

Today, almost one-third of French people aged 15 and over have already used at least one home automation device, sometimes without even knowing it, and this figure is only increasing.

Today and tomorrow

Home automation has evolved considerably in recent years and now represents a real asset for homes that are equipped with it. These technologies transform our daily lives by combining security, comfort, and ease of use.

We can now control lighting, blinds, temperature, security systems, and even our appliances with a simple gesture, wherever we are, via our phone.

Homes are no longer just automated: they have become smart, capable of adapting to our needs and lifestyles. The future of home automation is moving toward even smarter systems that integrate artificial intelligence. These technologies will anticipate our habits to automatically adjust our comfort levels while optimizing energy efficiency, making our homes more environmentally friendly and self-sufficient.
